TAMUK Bunnies and Rabbits The TAMUK rabbit is a specialized composite breed developed by Dr. Steven Lukefahr at Texas A&M University-Kingsville specifically to address the challenges of meat production in hot, humid climates. Unlike traditional breeds that often suffer from heat stress and temporary sterility in temperatures above 85°F, TAMUKs are engineered to remain productive and healthy throughout intense southern summers. The breed is technically a "composite," created by crossing seven different rabbit breeds to maximize hybrid vigor and specific performance traits. This genetic mix includes: Commercial Staples: New Zealand White, Californian, and Champagne d'Argent for meat quality and growth. Diverse Ancestry: New Zealand Red, Siamese Satin, Dutch, Harlequin, and Havana to introduce varied genetics and coat colors. Key Physical & Performance Characteristics TAMUK rabbits are medium-to-large animals, typically weighing between 8 and 12 pounds at maturity. They possess distinct physical adaptations for heat dissipation, most notably larger ears and thinner fur coats compared to standard meat breeds. Growth Efficiency: Kits reach a market weight of 5 lbs remarkably fast, often within 8 to 12 weeks. Reproductive Excellence: They are known for high fertility and large litter sizes, frequently ranging from 8 to 12 kits. Does exhibit strong maternal instincts and high milk production. Visual Variety: Due to their diverse genetic background, they come in a wide array of colors and patterns, including agouti, black, harlequin, and lilac. Benefits for Homesteading For small-scale farmers and homesteaders, the TAMUK offers a low-maintenance, sustainable protein source. They are noted for a docile and friendly temperament, making them easier to handle than some high-strung commercial lines. Their robust immune systems and resistance to common rabbit ailments further reduce the need for intensive veterinary intervention. While the original university program has since ended, the legacy of the TAMUK continues through dedicated private breeders who maintain these high-performance lines. They are generally very friendly and docile making them good pets.
